Their impact can be veri ed by computing the substrate resistances between the parts of the circuit that inject noise into the substrate and those parts that are sensitive to it. We will describe two di erent methods for substrate resistance calculation and how they have been implemented in a practical layout-to-circuit extraction program called SPACE. One method is an accurate 3D boundary-element technique that can be used for circuits containing up to few hundreds of substrate terminals. The other method is a fast interpolation technique that can be used for complete VLSI circuits. We will show how the user can specify the substrate coupling e ects that need to be modeled and we will give some examples.

Eecient Techniques for Accurate Modeling and Simulation of Substrate Coupling in Mixed-signal Ic's

Industry trends aimed at integrating higher levels of circuit functionality have triggered a proliferation of mixed analog-digital systems. Magniied noise coupling through the common chip substrate has made the design and veriication of such systems an increasingly diicult task. In this paper we present a fast eigendecomposition technique that accelerates operator application in BEM methods and...

An Efficient Technique for Substrate Coupling Parasitic Extraction with Application to RF/Microwave Spiral Inductors (RESEARCH NOTE)

This paper presents an efficient modeling method, based on the microstrip lines theory, for the coupling between a substrate backplane and a device contact. We derive simple closed-form formulas for rapid extraction of substrate parasitics. We use these formulas to model spiral inductors as important substrate-noise sources in mixed-signal systems. The proposed model is verified for the freque...

A Boundary Element Method for Substrate Cross-talk Analysis

An increasingly urgent topic for the realization of densely packed (mixed signal) integrated circuits is prevention of cross-talk via the substrate. Due to decreasing distances between components and increasing operating frequencies, the coupling between components and/or circuit blocks becomes stronger and affects the circuit behaviour more and more. This paper proposes a Boundary Element Meth...

Modeling and Analysis of Substrate Coupling in Integrated Circuits by

Substrate coupling in integrated circuits is the process whereby parasitic current flow in the substrate electrically couples devices in different parts of the circuit. Higher levels of integration and higher frequencies of operation make the coupling more pronounced in modern circuit realizations. High levels of integration are desirable in several applications for reducing the overall power d...

Reduced RC Models for IC Interconnections with Coupling Capacitances

The transmission behavior of interconnections in integrated circuits is often determined by their distributed RC effects. In this paper, we present a modeling technique, for incorporation in a layout-to-circuit extraction program, that accurately represents these effects. The method consists of first replacing IC interconnections by a complex RC network and then transforming this complex RC net...
